Being creative in jewellery making classes: The Minturn way

Updated: 22 hours ago

Christopher and Lee-Anne Minturn, the people behind Minturn Jewellery Ltd, offer services in all things jewellery. Minturn Jewellery is deeply connected to the community we serve and the jewellery trade we identify with.

The Minturn way

The Minturn approach to jewellery making is customer focused and deeply influenced by our family's legacy with Peter Minturn, and other Goldsmiths and Artisans we have worked with over the years. Our approach to design, remodelling, restoration, and repair projects is with honesty and open communication by building trust and recognising the needs of our clients.

In January, we were featured in the New Zealand Herald section for small business, by Tom Raynel, Multimedia Business Journalist.

In Tom's article we touched on why and how we decided to pivot our jewellery business after Covid-19. It was such a pleasure talking with Tom to explain our why. One of the biggest benefits from this experience was that it highlighted how our experiences have shaped what form the Jewellers' Collective should take.

The Jewellers Collective: a community workshop initiative

In 2021, we launched The Jewellers Collective, a community workshop initiative aimed at bridging the gap in accessing the jewellers’ bench. Our members range from crafters to artisans, and everything in between as they embrace the use both traditional and modern jewellery techniques in our well appointed workshop. Our space is invaluable to all jewellery makers: being creative in jewellery making classes either as self-directed makers or fully guided learners. There will always be a need for real people to bring a breath of difference into the jewellery trade and in how people make their jewellery designs.

Starting your jewellery making journey

Having said that the best place to start is at the beginning. Finding what actions you need to take to create your designs and learn to develop the skills required to make what your heart desires. The work reveals itself over time and our best advice is to be patient with yourself, and to initially make your designs achievable, functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Grace Minturn continues the legacy of her grandfather.

Grace teaches novice jewellery with our Team and has been diligently studying in her spare time with JTS in our workshop, completing the Advanced Training modules online with Peter Keep. Grace's dedication and progress serve as inspiration and highlights the value of continuous learning and skill development, something that is right to the heart of MJL & our family values.
